Hurricane Sandy

This Rapid Response Research Grant (RAPID) collected perishable damage data caused by Hurricane Sandy that made landfall on October 29, 2012. It was a very large storm (almost 800 miles in diameter according to NOAA) that affected large areas of coastlines of New York (Long Island and New York Metropolitan area) and New Jersey. The storm was classified as a Saffir-Simpson Category 1 hurricane based on its wind speed. However, because of its size and coinciding with high lunar tide, it generated high storm surge. The New York Metropolitan area sustained severe damage to coastal structures due to surge and wave actions. Most of the New York Metropolitan area lost electrical power and the transportation system became inoperable because of flooding of tunnels and loss of power.

The project collected weather-related hazard and damage data induced by Hurricane Sandy for power and transit infrastructure in New York Metropolitan area. The weather data include measurements of storm surge, flooding, rainfall and wind speeds. The spatial extent of the data collection is the transit region of New York Metropolitan area and the service areas of the power delivery systems responsible for the transit networks. The research team applied various techniques for data collection including ground-based observations, satellite data, and aerial and water-based survey maps.

Following Hurricane Sandy, Louisiana State University, University of Washington and New York University collaborated to collect hurricane hazard and damage data as part of an NSF RAPID grant. The team conducted six days of field reconnaissance in December 2012 to collect field data to document layout of power and transit infrastructure and to assess these systems for damage and hazard conditions resulting from Hurricane Sandy.

The team collected:
• A total of 907 photos were taken, with geographic information attached. 4 short video clips of power sub-station at E 14th St and Avenue C were collected. (Reference Number: 02-SA-FIE-001)
• A total of 77 minutes of geo-tagged videos were taken. These videos covered sections of lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. (Reference Number: 02-SA-FIE-002)

The routes travelled by the research team could be seen in our collaborating team website. Click here to go to link.

The data collected during the field trip could be shared upon request. Please contact friedland@lsu.edu for more details.
